By now it is obvious that the postmodern global situation has plunged down an abyss that is endless. Following a meeting with a staff person at Building Bridges Homeless Resource Center in Ukiah, California this morning, in which I was pleasantly informed that my exit date is March 9th at noon, headed out to the Plowshares Peace & Justice Center for a delicious free meal, and then boarded an MTA bus to the Ukiah Public Library, to use a new Dell public computer. Please allow me to share my retirement plan for your consideration, input, and support. The plan is to set up shop somewhere, and organize effective spiritually based direct action, in response to the abominable situation on the planet earth. Awoke early at Building Bridges Homeless Resource Center, with the Mahamantra ongoing in the mind! Not certain what is up, but that hasn’t happened in awhile. Following morning ablutions, walked to the laundromat on Talmage Road and after loading in the load, checked LOTTO tix and purchased a Colombian coffee at the Speedway Gas Station. [N.B. Won a small amount of money for the second time in a week, and picked new numbers.] Returning, enjoyed sipping the coffee as the laundry tumbled, and answering Charlie the manager’s question as to where I’d been the past couple of months. At that point, “frequent flier” Thomas Cook arrived with tall tales, which mixed it up a bit with my detailing the latest brush with death, amidst the cacophony of Spanish speakers doing a lot of laundry, and the presence of children running around. As always, continued identifying with the ParaBrahman (id est: not the body and not the mind) while the Hare Krishna Mahamantra repeated in the mind effortlessly. Am now back at Building Bridges, awaiting the free sumptuous December 17th community meal at 5 o’clock to arrive. The Real You Is Not Affected by Anything at All

Warmest spiritual greetings, Was moved out of the temporary hallway cot situation, and into the dorm. Am pleased to report that because I was away so long at two Adventist Health hospitals and then the Redwood Cove SNF for the antibiotics regimen, that I am “starting over” at Building Bridges Homeless Resource Center, and am not therefore going to be part of the mass exit on January 9th at noon. I am entitled to another three month stay beginning December 11th. Meanwhile, the federal housing voucher expired in error; the previous time spent in a hospital and a SNF somehow did not get that termination date extended…the housing navigator is looking into the problem. Otherwise, ambled to Plowshares this morning for the free meal, which was seriously welcome following a celebratory evening at the Ukiah Brewing Company upon my return to the big outside. Whereas there is ample money in the SBMC checking account due to not spending any for months and the SSA and SSI disbursements continuing to be auto-deposited into the checking account, (plus food stamps increasing as well), it is with great joy at having survived this latest round of treating a viral bacterial blood infection, (which would have been fatal if not detected in a subsequent blood test following my discharge from the Cloverdale SNF in the previous round of fighting this infection, in which the growing bacteria avoided detection because it had adhered to the wires of the Implanted Cardiac Defibrillator), it was therefore both appropriate and possible to go all out at the Ukiah Brewing Company last night. Along with enjoying three of the best brews during Happy Hour, added a shot o’ 12 yr. old Red Breast, known as the “nectar of the Irish Gods”, plus devouring a steak sandwich, the evening exponentially improved when someone suddenly walked up and inquired if I was Craig. My early 70s and beyond fellow communard Jon L. from East Bay Food Not Bombs was in town! This led to a wonderful reunion, replete with sharing stories which brought into the conversation the bartender and other patrons. Hours later, I walked back to Building Bridges completely identified with the Divine Absolute, and slept more soundly than had been done in years, awakening to everyone telling me how wonderful it is that I have returned to this most unique living situation. Longtime Maine Board of Environmental Protection leader  needs to step down.

Fallout over powerful Board Chair's September 28th appearance at Dragon Cement meeting with town and other officials - as - (wink wink) solely Sue Lessard Bucksport town manager.

THOMASTON. Susan Lessard is partway though her third 8 year term on the Board of Environmental Protection (most of those years as BEP chair.) She has had a profound influence on this administrative entity that, in the right hands, ensures public satisifaction with the major development issues of the day.

But many worry that Lessard's hands have increasingly moved the Board to the beat of a different drummer: Big industry.

Her September appearance at a meeting with Thomaston officials and others on a major cleanup issue - but feigning merely being there as a private citizen not BEP Chair - while tipping them DEP secrets - suggests it is time for her to move on.

For since her first appearance on the BEP in the Baldacci administration, many have noted a seachange in the venerable Board that was created in the mid 1970s.

The quarter century long "Lessard Board" has rejected nearly every public effort to make Maine DEP follow the law, when industry applicants refuse to meet the state's environment standards but demand to be approved anyway

BEP has reversed course and methodically begun to reject citizen and NGO appeals of DEP decisions. It has sneered at Maine Supreme Judicial Court rulings directed to it. It has tightened Board legal standing requirements for appellants while loosening pollution standards for applicants!

It has become a sad poster child exemplifying "industry capture" of a "People's Board".

The Lessard Board has concocted ridiculous rationales for refusing to require that applicants prove they can meet the state's required pollution standards before approval. A monstrous rubber stamp - as long as the polluter wannabees promise to someday, some way, follow the law...but in the meantime...pollute away!

The once functional  Board that historically has given all citizens s rights to have their voices heard and natures needs respected, is, thanks to Lessard's careful mismanagement, no longer capable of doing so. 

This is evident when it enthuses over grandiose, improbable plans brought forward by absentee investors with political connections but no facts  that coyly hint at millions of dollars flowing into certain Maine pockets.. When the BEP  spurns legal decisions they dont like - even from the Supreme Judical Court they reject them  forcing the appellants to expensively start its appeal over at a lower court.    And  the board chuckles at its new found cruelty and disservice to nature 

Maine needs to craft a replacement ,Sooner. Not later.  One that is sensibly biocentric toward all species not just Homo sapiens and our food and fun species

I recall a BEP hearing about oil tanker safety where an industrial lobbyist challengedmy right as a citizen activist to speak. "We need MORE Ron Hubers!" t he BEP Chair admonished him.

We also need less Lessards.

Let's make the Board of Environmental Protection actually protect the environment.

 If it can't? Replace it with something that does.

Warmest spiritual greetings, Please know that I’ve turned down the chance to be considered for a studio apartment located several miles south of Ukiah, California’s Building Bridges Homeless Resource Center. It is so far away from the City of Ukiah, that it would have been necessary to utilize senior services to come and pick up my laundry, because services (as well as the rest of urbanity) would be so far distant. The B2 housing navigator informs me that because I am not willing to consider the place, assuming that I would have been offered a lease, that I am in jeopardy of losing my Federal housing voucher in October. Please note that if the landlady did offer it to me and I took it, I would be sleeping in a small room with a small kitchen, shower, and closet located in the 2200 block of South State Street, without wheels, and only sketchy MTA bus service. The back yard does have a weathered picnic table with a new umbrella, and a BBQ. Lastly, I would be welcome to stand out by the side of the road and enjoy watching the clouds o’er head unlimitedly. I thank confused postmodern America for appreciating my 73 years of sincere citizenship, particularly the past 50 years of frontline radical environmental and peace & justice activism, which includes 23 years of Catholic Worker service to the “poorest of the poor”, all of which was performed unpaid.
